Frequently asked questions
Do Swiss passport holders need a visa to visit India?
Yes, but the standard route is electronic. Swiss citizens are on the Indian e-Visa eligibility list and apply directly online through the Bureau of Immigration's e-Visa portal for tourist, business, medical and conference travel. The 30-day, 1-year and 5-year tourist variants are all available; approval is electronic within a small number of working days and no consulate visit is required for short-stay e-Visa travel.
Should I use the Geneva Consulate General or the Bern Embassy?
It depends on where in Switzerland you live. The Geneva post handles consular services for the French-speaking cantons — Geneva, Vaud, Neuchâtel, Fribourg, Jura and Valais — plus the multilateral workload at the UN, WTO and Conference on Disarmament. The Bern embassy handles consular services for the German-speaking and Italian-speaking cantons and overall diplomatic relations with Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein.
What kinds of visa applications go through Geneva rather than e-Visa?
Categories outside the e-Visa scope: employment visas, long-term student visas, research visas, journalist and film visas, and the entry visa for persons of Indian origin and their dependents. These require document submission through the authorised Swiss visa application centre with the Geneva consular section providing embassy-side processing for applicants in the Romandie cantons.
Why is the Indian mission in Chambésy and not in central Geneva?
Chambésy is the international-organisations quarter immediately north of central Geneva and within walking distance of the Palais des Nations, the WHO main building and the broader UN system. India operates a dual-hat mission — Permanent Mission to the UN Office Geneva, the Conference on Disarmament and the WTO, together with the Consulate General for the Romandie cantons — and the Chambésy chancery sits in the natural diplomatic quarter for the multilateral side of that mandate.
Can OCI cardholders in French-speaking Switzerland use the Geneva post?
Yes. Overseas Citizen of India cardholders resident in the Romandie cantons apply for OCI services at the Geneva Consulate General directly — new OCI applications for newborn children of OCI parents, OCI miscellaneous services after passport change, and the lifetime-validity OCI maintenance procedures. The documentation requirements are set by the Ministry of Home Affairs and procedures follow the standard MEA framework.
Does the Geneva post handle India's WTO and UN multilateral work?
Yes — that is the second of its two roles. India is one of the founding members of the World Trade Organization, an active member of the Conference on Disarmament and a substantial participant across the UN Geneva system (UN Human Rights Council, UNCTAD, UNHCR, IOM, the WHO global-health agenda, the ILO labour standards process and the WIPO intellectual-property dialogue). The Chambésy chancery hosts the Permanent Representative and the multilateral teams alongside the consular section.
