Embassy of Japan in Rome

Overview

The Embassy of Japan in Rome is Japan's diplomatic mission to Italy, processing visa applications for Italian residents and providing consular services to Japanese nationals in Italy.

Visa Services

Japan grants visa-free entry to citizens of over 60 countries, including Italy (90 days). The passport must be valid for the entire stay (Japan does not apply the usual 6-month rule found elsewhere). A return or onward ticket is mandatory — Japanese immigration is strict, and a one-way ticket can lead to entry refusal. Visit Japan Web is an optional online platform for completing customs and immigration forms before arrival, speeding up airport processing. Extensions of visa-free stays are difficult and only granted for exceptional reasons (illness, a missed flight). For work, study, or long-term residence, numerous visa categories exist requiring a Certificate of Eligibility (CoE) issued by the sponsor in Japan. Italy has a Working Holiday agreement with Japan, open to those aged 18-30.

Consular Services

The embassy provides passport and travel document services, civil registration, document attestation and legalization, and emergency consular assistance for Japanese nationals in Italy.

Trade & Export Support

The embassy's economic section supports bilateral trade promotion and business matchmaking between Japanese and Italian companies.
