Germany
Germany, Europe's largest economy and most populous nation, sits at the heart of the European Union as a global leader in technology, manufacturing and cultural influence. A founding member of the Schengen Area, Germany connects visa-free travel across the whole Schengen Area for most nationalities — the visa section below covers specifics by passport. Beyond its economic weight, the country spans reunified Berlin, Bavarian tradition, medieval old towns and one of Europe's densest rail networks, making the whole country easy to explore without a car.
Germany Visa & Schengen Area Overview
Germany operates within the Schengen visa framework, enabling visa holders to travel freely across the Schengen Area, including Austria, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland and the Nordic countries. Most international visitors need a Schengen visa to enter, with the type depending on purpose of travel, intended duration, and nationality. The Schengen short-stay visa (Type C) covers stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period for tourism, business meetings, conferences, family visits, cultural events and short-term educational programs. For stays exceeding 90 days — employment, university study, research, or family reunification — a national visa (Type D) is required, which functions as both an entry visa and a residence permit. Application procedures run through German embassies and consulates worldwide, supported by online resources and, in many countries, dedicated visa application centers. A handful of practical points apply across most application types: submit applications at least 6-8 weeks before intended travel, and no earlier than 6 months ahead; all applicants provide biometric data (fingerprints and a photograph) in person, valid for 59 months for subsequent applications; visa appointments should be booked well ahead, particularly in summer and around holiday periods; Schengen applicants need travel health insurance meeting the Schengen minimum coverage level (check the current threshold) and must demonstrate sufficient financial means for the stay (check the current daily-rate guideline with a German embassy or consulate); work visas require pre-approval from the German Federal Employment Agency (Bundesagentur für Arbeit) unless exempted, such as EU Blue Card holders or certain ICT transfers; some categories, including family reunion and certain employment sectors, may require basic German language proficiency (A1-B1 level); and applicants apply at the German embassy or consulate responsible for their place of residence, not their nationality.

Guides
Germany's 16 federal states carry real political and cultural weight — a legacy of the centuries it spent as a patchwork of separate kingdoms, duchies and free cities before unification in 1871 — which is why the country has no single dominant capital the way Paris defines France or London defines England. Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Cologne and Dresden each function as a genuine center in their own right rather than as satellites of one city, and one of Europe's densest rail networks ties them together without requiring a car.
